In October 2008, bishops from all over the world came to Rome for a Synod on the Word of God. Now, two years later, the Pope has issued the apostolic exhortation "Verbum Domini" with his personal reflections on the Synod of Bishop's conclusions.

Benedict XVI stresses the need to read and interpret the Sacred Scriptures in accord with the "mind of the Church," and points to the importance of the saints in this regard: "Every saint is like a ray of light streaming forth from the word of God . . . holiness in the Church constitutes an interpretation of Scripture which cannot be overlooked. The Holy Spirit who inspired the sacred authors is the same Spirit who impels the saints to offer their lives for the Gospel." Among the saints mentioned in this context are Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta and Saint Josemaria Escrivá.
